Bluffton
The Town of Bluffton is located in Beaufort County on the Intracoastal Waterway, the southernmost coastal county in South Carolina. Bluffton is located just 12 miles west of Hilton Head Island, SC and approximately 20 miles northeast of Savannah, GA and is surrounded by three rivers; Colleton River, Okatie River and the May River.
What is there to do?
There are a multitude of things to do and see in Bluffton. We have fabulous restaurants, eclectic art galleries and family entertainment centers. If you’re a history buff, take a tour of Old Town. Whether you like to golf, go horseback riding, kayak, shop or just kick back to watch the sunset, there is truly something for everyone.
Where are the nearest beaches?
Bluffton is located just across the bridge from Hilton Head Island, home to some world-class beaches. We are also a stone’s throw from Huntington Beach, known for its scenic lighthouse.
What airports are close by?
Hilton Head Island Airport (HHH) is the closest at 13 miles from Bluffton, while Savannah International Airport (SAV) is just 28 miles away.
What other fun day trips can we take in the area?
Beyond Bluffton, and the short drive to Hilton Head and Savannah, you can also visit Beaufort, the Beaufort Isles, and Charleston from Bluffton. You’ll find everything from zip lining to movie tours.
What are the property taxes?
Residential property tax on the owner’s principal residence is assessed at 4% of its appraised value, providing proper applications have been made. All other residential and commercial property is assessed at 6%.
How are the schools?
Bluffton schools, under the Beaufort County School District, exceed the academic expectations put forth by the state in standardized testing and graduation retention. There are several public elementary schools, two middle schools and one public high school. Bluffton is also served by a number of independent schools. Our Okatie Elementary School has received numerous national awards. Public institutions of higher education in Bluffton include the University of South Carolina Beaufort South Campus and the Technical College of the Lowcountry. Bluffton is also home to the International Junior Golf Academy.
What makes up the economy?
As a tourist destination, Bluffton is home to a large number of hotels, restaurants, art galleries and shopping areas such as Tanger Outlets. Bluffton is also the headquarters for CareCore National, provider of evidence-based healthcare solutions. We have a robust building and real estate community, and many retirees call Bluffton home. Our community thrives on small businesses and their contribution to the community. Higher education is also an important sector in the local economy, with institutions such as the University of South Carolina Beaufort South Campus and Technical College of the Lowcountry nearby.
